The Final Chapter of an Icon
As the ultimate open-top expression of the legendary W16 era, the Bugatti W16 Mistral represents far more than a high-performance roadster, it is the closing statement of an engineering dynasty. In its ‘La Perle Rare’ specification, this extraordinary machine transcends automotive design to become a deeply personal work of art. Crafted through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure personalization program, the vehicle embodies the philosophy that true luxury lies not only in performance, but in individuality. The journey toward this singular creation began in August 2023 at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where Jascha Straub, Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, first met the client who would commission this exceptional example. From the earliest conversations, the ambition was clear: to celebrate the inherent elegance of the W16 Mistral while enriching it with a sculptural, flowing aesthetic that would elevate the hypercar into a pearl-like tribute to elemental beauty. What followed was a meticulous creative dialogue, a shared pursuit of harmony between Bugatti’s design mastery and the client’s refined vision.

A Pearlescent Vision Takes Shape
The conceptual heart of ‘La Perle Rare’ lies in its luminous, two-tone exterior, a composition inspired by Bugatti’s signature hand-painted “Vagues de Lumière” motif, which captures the way light plays across the marque’s sculpted surfaces. Seeking a new interpretation of this philosophy, the design process evolved from an initial silver concept toward a palette rooted in white tones enriched with metallic warmth. Through continuous refinement, exploration and discussion, two entirely new bespoke colours were born: a warm, gold-infused hue crowning the upper surfaces, paired with a refined warm white enveloping the lower body. The visual separation between these tones evokes the poetic interplay between sky and earth, reinforcing the car’s open-top character and sculptural proportions. Achieving the signature white-and-gold dividing lines required hundreds of hours of craftsmanship, from meticulous hand-applied masking to precise paint layering. Each stage demanded exceptional patience and technical mastery, resulting in a flawless finish that appears almost liquid under shifting light. Complementing the bodywork, the diamond-cut alloy wheels were finished in a specially curated paint mixture mirroring the gold-and-white theme, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic that captures and reflects light from every angle. The exterior of ‘La Perle Rare’ is not merely painted, it is composed, like a fine artwork shaped by depth, reflection and motion.

An Interior of Luminous Precision
The artistry continues seamlessly within the cabin, where exterior elegance transitions into an immersive, jewel-like environment. All interior carbon components are painted in white, amplifying the luminous theme and creating a concentrated atmosphere of refined brilliance. Door panels feature alternating white and warm gold linework that follows the concave sculpted surfaces, accentuating their flowing geometry and reinforcing the car’s visual rhythm. Warm ambient lighting subtly illuminates these elements, enhancing the pearl-inspired aesthetic and introducing a sense of depth and reflection after dark. Throughout the cockpit, machined and polished aluminium trim elements, from steering wheel accents to centre console dials and door handles, capture light with the same refined intensity as the exterior bodywork. Each surface is crafted and finished with extraordinary precision, reinforcing the harmony between artistry and engineering. The dialogue between interior and exterior is intentional and complete; every material, finish and reflective surface contributes to a cohesive sensory experience. In ‘La Perle Rare,’ the cabin is not a separate space but a continuation of the sculpture, enveloping driver and passenger in a carefully curated world of light, texture and bespoke craftsmanship.

A Personal Signature Etched in Heritage
The final layer of this Sur Mesure creation lies in its deeply personal identity. The name ‘La Perle Rare,’ rendered in Jascha Straub’s own handwriting, adorns the vehicle as both stitched detailing along the central tunnel and engraved accents on the bespoke white-and-gold engine cover, as well as a painted signature beneath the rear wing. This intimate gesture transforms the hypercar into a signed artwork, a declaration of individuality that elevates the car beyond specification and into legacy. In an emotive nod to Bugatti’s storied past, the iconic Dancing Elephant sculpture by Rembrandt Bugatti is subtly echoed within the cockpit and on the exterior body panels behind the front wheels. This historic emblem unites contemporary personalization with over a century of design heritage, creating a bridge between modern hypercar innovation and timeless artistic expression. In ‘La Perle Rare,’ performance, craftsmanship and history converge in perfect harmony. As the W16 era draws to a close, this one-of-one masterpiece stands not only as a celebration of mechanical excellence, but as a testament to the enduring power of vision, a rare pearl shaped by passion, precision and the unmistakable spirit of Bugatti.
